A tankette is a tracked armoured fighting vehicle that resembles a small tank, roughly the size of a car. It is mainly intended for light infantry support and scouting. Colloquially it may also simply mean a small tank. Several countries built tankettes between the 1920s and 1940s, and some saw limited combat in the early phases of World War II. The vulnerability of their light armor and their limits in fire power, however, eventually led armies to abandon the concept.

In the Girls und Panzer universe tankettes are used, like the other types of tanks, in Sensha-dō competitions. Their main prupose is to be the eyes of the team by scouting the enemie's movements, using their speed and small size to spot them without being seen and retreat quickly in case they make contact. However there are schools that, for various reasons, use tankettes as their main force during the matches. An example of it is Anzio Girls High School which can deploy a considerable amount of Carro Veloce from their arsenal, mainly because the school is not wealthy enough to buy proper tanks, so they purchase tankettes which are cheapers. Despite their low cost and speed, relying on tankettes in sensha-dō matches as the main offensive force is in most cases not a good strategy, especially against schools that deploy medium or heavier tanks whose armor is simply too thick to be damaged by machine-guns armed tankettes.

Tankettes are widely used in the unofficial tank competition know as tankathlon since the sole rule in this type of matches is the tanks' weight must be below 10 tons.
