Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match (ガールズ&パンツァードリームタンクマッチ) is a tank battle game based on Girls und Panzer Anime. It's developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, released in February 22nd, 2018 for the PS4. An English-language version was released a week later, February 27th, 2018.

An enhanced port for the Nintendo Switch marked with "DX" or "Deluxe" was released in Japan in February 21, 2019. The multi-language Asian version was released on the same day. The extra features found in the Switch version can also be added to the PS4 one via paid DLC.

The game's Japanese website can be found here.

Game[]

The game features a story-mode, a 5v5 online multiplayer mode, special missions - including a fight against a giant BOCO. The game takes after the events of Der Film, and before Das Finale. The DX version adds the characters and mechanics of Das Finale. There is also a new tournament mode called "Panzerfahren Festival" where a team of two will participate at first, getting new members from other teams they defeat. The Type 10 tank will be fought in this mode as the final boss when certain conditions are met.

Story Mode[]

In order to promote Panzerfahren in Ooarai for the following year, Anzu, Yuzu & Momo decide to update their school's aging promotional video by making a new one from scratch.

To this end, they opt to use the footage from the last exhibition match and the battle against the All-Stars University Team but realize that they not only need factual commentary from their side, but also the input from the other schools that took part in those battles.

The Ooarai Student Council then organizes an "Appreciation Festival" and invites Saunders, St. Gloriana, Pravda, Kuromorimine, Anzio, Chi-Ha-Tan, Jatkosota as well as the All-Stars University Team. As an incentive for their contribution in the presentation, all the participants were promised full match data sharing and dissemination.

Miho was chosen to preside over the recollection event with the Anglerfish team backing her up. Alice Shimada will join in the latter half.

Domination Battle[]

In this mode, the player fights in one of the 9 selectable schools in 5 randomly selected maps against randomly selected enemy schools. The challenges are:

  • Annihilation Battle
  • Flag Battle
  • 1vs1 Battle
  • Arrive at destination
  • Survival Battle

The Domination Battle starts primarily as a challenge for each school, where the girls talk about what they will win if they win these 5 challenges.

Each school has its own little story, which shows what the girls received as a prize after successfully completing all 5 challenges. Anzio, for example, receives a CV-33 Tankette toy tank as a prize, although Anchovy would have been more happy with a real tank.

Due to the 5 random challenges it can be very easy for one school and extremely difficult for the other school, which is very clear in relation to the Jatkosota school, which only has one tank: if you play with any school as a team (i.e If you don't fight against them in a 1vs1 battle, it will be easy. If you play as Jatkosota, you better pray that you don't face the Kuromorimine in the survival battle.

In addition to the end of each ministory for the schools, the player also gets a tank that belongs to the school unlocked.

Panzerfahren Festival[]

In this mode, the player fights against other teams that are completely randomly thrown together. Even before the start, you can put together your own and only allied NPC tanks in the ''Tank Garage'': tanks of your choice, colors, decals, as well as commanders with crew and support cards builds are - if unlocked through other matches - available. Here you have to equip everything new for each newly selected tank, because the tanks that have already been modified in the tank garage in the main game are not taken over in the Tank Driving Festival, just like the other way around - but this allows the players to have the same tank twice with different commanders and crew sets to play.

The mode then starts with a ceremony, moderated by Ami Chono, surrounded by students from different schools. In it she explains what this festival is about, and the formation of mixed teams begins. Initially, a maximum of 16 teams start with 2 tanks each. 2 teams compete against each other, in which the winning team takes a tank from the losing team. This team, now consisting of 3 tanks, then fights in the 2nd round against another team with 3 tanks. In the 3rd round it is 4 against 4, and in the 4th and final round it is 5 against 5.

Here it is of course important to win all 4 rounds. But there is a plot twist hidden here: if the player achieves more points than his NPC comrades, the festival will not end after the 4th round has been completed, but Ami Chono, who leads the festival, wants to compete with the Player. Regardless of whether the player wins or loses, at the end the player receives Tank Colors and (if any Bokos have been shot down) decals for his tanks. If the player wins against Ami Chono, he will also get the Type 10 MBT unlocked with Ami Chono as the commander.

Extra Match[]

These are additional missions based on story parts or completely original ones with varying objectives.

Free Match[]

In Free Match mode, the player can freely set the battle mode, map, team arrangement and team formations.

With ''Rules'' you can do the following:

  • Select one of 14 Playable Stages (Maps)
  • switch between team blue and team red on team,
  • switch between flag battle and annihilation battle,
  • Set Time Limit to either 5, 10 or 15 minutes.

With ''Teams'' you set up yours and the opposing team. For the player you simply choose a tank and can use ''Y''/Square to switch between *Default Tank and **Custom Tank. The same thing works for NPCs, but you can also emptying the slot temporarily by pressing "Y"/Cross again. It can be filled again with pressing ''Y''/square once more, allowing the last tank to reappear.

*In the case of the default tank, the tank is in its original condition: without a crew, and original color & commander. These two can still be exchanged, but the crew positions remain empty.

**With custom tank, the tanks are also used in the state in which the player had modified them via Tank Garage: custom color, custom decals, custom Tank Commander and custom crew and support setup.

With ''X''/Triangle you can set either yourself or an NPC tank as a flag tank, even for the enemy team.

The CPU level determines how accurate and strong the NPC should be. Under certain circumstances, the CPU level even exceeds the maximum possible strength of a player-assembled tank from the Tank Garage. In other words, a single CPU level 10 Type-10 MBT can take down a group of 5 Centurions from miles away before they can even detect it.

Bugs[]

on Nintendo Switch:

  1. a common Bug that occurs with the T28, that if you play a Free Match with more than 4 T28 and get all of them very close to your location, it can crash the game by freezing it. Certain tests implied that the Nintendo Switch Console is too weak to Handle the Amount of T28 Tanks, since the PlayStation version and Nintendo Switch Version - emulated on a PC with Yuzu does not Crash.
  2. The second bug is a very rare one: it can happen that if you already unlocked the Type-10 in the Panzer fahren Festival Mode, and later beat this Tank in the Extra Match "That's Against Regulations!" on Extreme difficulty, it can happen that the Type-10, alongside with the Commander Ami Chono Disappears from the Tank and Commander List. The only way to get it back is to play with another Nintendo switch account that also has the Type 10 unlocked, since attempting just restarting the Game or even the Console won't let the Type-10 Reappear.
  3. The third Bug regards the Game engine if like when you play it on PC through emulation: it seems that when you unlock the FPS Limit for this Game (in Yuzu with CTRL + U) the Tanks gets extremely unstable, causing them to Flip over or Spinning extremely Fast when attempting to Drift. The cause might be that the Switch Version only supports Max 30fps, although the PlayStation version Supports max. 60fps on PS4 Pro and PS5 without these problems.
  4. When you reset the Decals on the T28 Heavy Tank, a white "005" Number-Decal from Pravda appears on the left side near the Front of the ejectable Tank Treads (Decal Point "I"), even though you haven't unlocked this decal yet.
  5. When Playing the Extra Mission "It's against regulations!" on Extreme, if you hide behind cover and are the only tank left (or only accompanied by Rabbit Team's M3 Lee behind cover), there is a chance for Ami Chono's AI to break until you or Rabbit Team get out of cover. This will result in the Type-10's turret movement to be erratic as the tank is frozen in place. Sometimes you can catch this by manoeuvring the camera to a position where the cover and UI do not block the view of Ami Chono's tank in the distance.

Trivia[]

  • All tanks unlocked in the game are delivered by Saunders' C5M Galaxy using Low-altitude parachute-extraction system (LAPES).
  • In the Switch version, the Hard difficulty of the "This wall is like a Mont Blanc" DX Extra mission was given a 5-minute time limit while Normal and Very Hard were given 10 minutes. The halved time makes it a bit troublesome to clear due to the large number of checkpoints and the FT-17's low cruising speed, necessitating usage of unconventional routes to succeed.
  • The PS4 version has an exclusive DLC that adds the M3 pink and 38(t) gold paint color from the friendly match against St. Gloriana, the old Ooarai School crest decal that was painted on Panzer IV in the beginning of the anime, the Volleyball Club revival and volleyball logo decals that was painted on Type 89, and the Piyopiyo and Carro Veloce decals from the mock battle from Anzio OVA. The Stug III with the paintjob and flags from St. Gloriana match is considered a new tank. For unknowing reasons, that DLC isn't available on Switch version.
  • The Switch version has the former PS4's pre-order DLC already in the base game, that was the Ooarai school uniform for the commanders and the Ooarai winter coat for the Anglerfish's team members along with decals of the characters using those uniforms. That DLC isn't available to get on PS4 these days, and the period to redeem the pre-order code already closed, since the time period was only for 1 year after the game released on PS4, making the Switch version have some exclusive content for new players compared to PS4 players that doesn't got the game in pre-order.
