Jagdpanther |
- "Damn you! Our tracks are really heavy!"
- ―Emi Kojima
The Jagdpanzer V Jagdpanther (ordnance inventory designation Sd. Kfz. 173) was a German tank destroyer built upon a modified chassis of the Panther, known for its very sloped frontal armor and its lethal 8.8 cm L/71 anti-tank gun. It first appeared in the anime in Episode 10.
History[]
Development[]
On 3 August 1942, a major change in design direction occured when Waffen Prüfungsamt 6 informed the firm of Krupp that the suspension and other components of the new Panther were to be used for 'schwere Panzerjaeger (Pz.Sfl.IVd) 8.8 cm L/71'. The first conceptual design drawings of the new vehicle was discussed in September 1942.
During a meeting at the Reichsministerium für Rüstung und Kriegsproduktion on 15 October, it was decided that the firm of Daimler-Benz would continue design development of this vehicle. Since production was planned to commence at the Daimler Benz assembly plant in the summer of 1943, Krupp was to assist Daimler Benz with the design of the vehicle and still remained primary responsibility for the design of the gun and gun mount.
Due to the limited space at Daimler-Benz, and problems that the firm was encountering in meeting production quotas for the new Panther, by 24 May it was decided that Mühlenbau und Industrie Aktiengesellschaft (MIAG) would produce the vehicle instead.
'schweres Sturmgeschütz auf Fahrgestell Panther mit der 8.8cm L/71'.
Although it had been hoped that production of this new vehicle could have started in July 1943, the reality of continuing delays prompted the creation of two additional facilities to supplement's MIAG's efforts, these were: Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen-Hannover (MNH) and Maschinenbau und Bahnbedarf (MBA).
The vehicle was designated as 'Jagdpanther' on 29 November 1943 by Hitler, and it undertook its first demonstration on 17 December that year, with production finally starting the following month. Optimistically estimated to be build at 150 units per month, in practice a maximum of just 72 were build per month. All told, MIAG build 270 Jagdpanthers (January 1944 - April 1945), MNH constructed 112 (November 1944 - March 1945) and MBA produced 37 (December 1944 - March 1945) for a total of 419 vehicles.
The last 'production' Jagdpanthers were produced at the factory by German staff just after the end of World War II under the supervision of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). Nine Panthers and a dozen Jagdpanthers were produced, then shipped to England for evaluation. A complete Panther and a complete Jagdpanther produced this way are displayed at the Bovington Tank Museum, Dorset, with brass plates on them explaining their history.
Operational History[]
Jagdpanthers were assigned to heavy antitank battalions (schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilungen) and would see combat on both the Western Front and Eastern Front, though most of the Jagdpanthers would be sent to face the Western allies, it first saw its combat debut during the fighting in Normandy against the British. Deployment of this powerful and much-needed tank destroyer to the Eastern front only occurred from January 1945 onwards.
In Girls Und Panzer[]
Three schools are using the Jagdpanther - a model produced from September to December 1944, recognizable by its gun mask secured by eight bolts, and by caltrops and ventilation grilles of the engine, identical to those of the Panther Ausf.A.
Kuromorimine Girls' Academy[]
The Jagdpanther is used as one of the 'heavy hitters' of the team. Serving alongside Maho Nishizumi's main force, during the Finals against Ooarai Girls Academy and commanded by Emi Kojima, it participated in the initial assault and push against the enemy tanks. However, during the pursuit it was ambushed by Turtle Team in their Hetzer, who immobilized it by destroying its tracks. After its crew repaired the track and moved to rejoin the main force, it was ambushed again by the Hetzer and its tracks were destroyed a second time, much to the annoyance of its commander. It later participated in the last phase of the match, trying to knock out Ooarai's Tiger (P) which was blocking the entrance to the area where the flag tanks from both schools were engaged in a battle.
All-Stars University Team[]
A Jagdpanther is used as a training vehicle, appearing briefly during a training match as it is knocked out by a M4 Sherman.
Bellwall Academy[]
The Jagdpanther is one of the tanks the Kashiwaba Sisters bought for the sensha-dō team, as-per Emi Nakasuga's request. It is commanded by Neko Yamamori, who uses its sloped armor and 88 mm gun to great and devastating effects on the front-line. It is commonly used by Neko to charge the enemy head on, taking out heavy tanks with her aggressive tactics.
