The Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (陸上自衛隊 Rikujō Jieitai) was created on July 1st, 1954. The JGSDF fields modern, indigenously-produced tanks made by companies such as Mitsubishi and Komatsu. Such vehicles include the Type 10, Type 90 and Type 74 MBTs as well as the armored fighting vehicles such as the Type 89, Type 73, Type 96 APCs and the Komatsu LAV.
The JGSDF has recently realigned its Cold-War era focus from the Soviet Union, towards a more modern threat from the People's Republic of China.
As of today, the JGSDF has approximately 150,000 personnel, and fields one dedicated armored division on active duty. However, the individual brigades and divisions fielded by the JGSDF are usually combined-arms units, which field both infantry and armor.
Captain Ami Chōno, the commander of a Type 10, and probably a tank platoon, is currently the only JGSDF member featured in Girls und Panzer. Her presence alone, and the fact that she was trained by Shiho Nishizumi, heavily implies that the JGSDF has a strong force of influence in the National Japanese Sensha-dou Federation.
