Marie (マリー) is a supporting character in Girls und Panzer das Finale.
Profile[]
Marie is a student from Escalator faction of BC Freedom Academy, she is the overall commander and commanded a FT-17 with the emblem "Red Heart".
Appearance[]
Marie is a short girl with long blond hairs with an Ojou ringlet and dark green eyes. She is seen wearing BC Freedom's Sensha-dō uniform inside matches and the schoolgirl one outside. She is also often seen with a fluffy fan with the school emblem on it.
Personality[]
Marie is more graceful and posed than her vice-commanders who are more hot-blooded. She does seem to be gluttonous as she is always seen eating cakes. Due to her having another crew in the FT (which is a 2-man tank), she is unable to enter the tank. Instead due to her sitting on a cushion on the tank, another trait of hers is that of carelessness with it being impossible for her to enter the tank even while under heavy fire from enemy tanks, She also seems haughty and initially condescending refusing to bow during the greetings before the match against Ooarai and mocking her opponent during the match. Despite her spoiled attitude and the fact she seems ignorant about Oshida and Andou's constant quarreling, she often do her best to make them cooperate such a force them to team up against her in a training match or messing with her hair and uniform to focus the attention on her preventing them for arguing. Marie also seems to be a graceful loser, praising Ooarai’s tactics and inviting their team to a shared meal. Being the overall commander, she’s a good strategist, being able to stage a violent altercation between the two faction that’s so convincing that it’s enough to fool Ooarai that BC Freedom is beyond any cooperation between its factions.
Background[]
Warning: The following information may not be inside Girls und Panzer's main core. It has some level of canonicity within the continuity, but reader discretion is advised. |
Marie is seen on a craddle next to the Cauldron tournament second round bracket. She is then seen assisting to the second Round with Andou and Oshida astonished by the ensuing chaos following the introduction of "Team Oni" and she is last seen alongside Asparagus worried by the dark aura emmanating from Shizuka and Jajka.

She then undergoes several trainings, where she made Andou and Oshida fight each other on who is the best qualified to protect her tank which ended as a tie or forced the two frenemies to cooperate against her where she destroyed them both.
When the time came for the belligerents of the first matches of the Winter Continuous Track Cup to be decided, Marie had her two lieutenants go to the stage and pick from a ballot. When they picked a three and realized that BC was to fight against Ooarai in the first match, Andou and Oshida blew up at each other. Marie however she seemed to be uncaring about the tournament, focusing on her cake more than the match. She told them to stop arguing as it ruins her enjoyment of the dessert. Andou and Oshida’s argument does seem to be real, although it’s unknown if Marie’s actions shown were just a ploy to feign ignorance or if she was genuine in her remarks.
Days later, Marie witnessed her peers who were on the verge of rioting, arguing about the meals served. Right before the riot could start, Marie intervened. She initially acted as if she didn’t care about what her peers were doing and even had her crew of the FT bring her a meal to eat. Instead of the meal being the regular Escalator faction meal, it was instead a taiyaki (the same product made by Andou at her food stall) that was filled with chocolate. When Marie enjoyed the meal, she stunned her peers who also wanted the taiyaki. She then revealed to them that she had already ordered their share. Curious, her piers ate and enjoyed the unorthodox dish. It was then that they realized what Marie was telling them. Marie had combined a food the poorer students ate with rich chocolate from the rich students’ cafeteria. Her piers realized that Marie wanted them to work together because just like with the taiyaki, the resulting product can be unexpectedly powerful. Marie then convinced her subordinates to work together and forge an alliance. She then realized the opportunity their tyraid at the ballots had brought them. She knew that Ooarai would send a spy (Yukari Akiyama) and how she would arrive. As a result of the intel, Marie had her subordinates pretend to be still rioting.
When Yukari arrived, she was oblivious to the fact that her cover had already been blown and that everything she was recording was nothing more than an act. During her infiltration video, Marie is seen sitting on her tank eating a cake while everyone else is fighting. Pretending to be worried about her food, Marie definitively feigned ignorance this time around. Marie’s ploy was so effective that by the time Yukari had left, the latter was completely convinced that BC was unable to cooperate with each other.
During the Winter Continuous Track Cup first round match against Ooarai Girls Academy, she commanded the flag tank a FT-17 with its distinctive "Red Heart". During the greetings, she refuses to bow to her opponent asking instead why she should (although it’s possible that this was just a farce to further convince Ooarai that she didn’t care about the match), When the battle started, Marie had the FT be positioned on a hill that was only accessible by a wooden bridge with a ARL 44 as an escort. She and her crew then disembarked and pretended to be have a picnic that was visible from Ooarai’s position. She also had her tanks pretend to be shooting at each other to further sell the ploy. At this point, the ruse had worked so well that Ooarai threw away all precautions and decided to cross the wooden bridge without scouting the surroundings. Once the vast majority of Ooarai’s tanks were on the middle of the bridge, Marie sprang the trap by having her tanks reveal their position and fire on the Ooarai’s tanks, effectively trapping the latter’s tanks. While being confident in the battle being over quick with a decisive victory, Marie hadn’t accounted for the other Ooarai tanks. Ooarai’s Duck and Leopon Team had flanked BC’s position and fired at them from rear. Meanwhile, due to Shark Team’s Mark IV, the Ooarai tanks on the bridge were able to escape without a single loss. Realizing that her trap had failed and that her formation was now untenable, Marie ordered her tank to pull back and while in formation, she is seen singing the Chant de l'Oignon with her teammates.
Moments later while her two lieutenants were engaging in a friendly conversation, apologizing for their previous remarks at each other and showing comradery, the Ooarai tanks had caught up to them and began shooting at them. While not expecting the enemy tanks to catch up that quickly, Marie kept her calm and had her tanks move to take up defensive positions in a bocage. While the FT was in the centre of the bocage and being guarded by the other tanks, Marie and her crew disembarked, choosing instead to have a picnic. Minutes later, the Ooarai tanks caught up and began to distract the BC tanks with the Rabbit, Leopon and Shark Teams while the other tanks began to flank the BC tanks. Using the turret of the Mallard Team to wreak havoc with the BC tanks by tricking the two factions of the BC team into believing the other to be rebelling. This caused the team to break formation and begin to commit friendy fire. Marie was initially unaware of the friendiy fire until the escorting ARL guarding the FT, began to leave formation, confusing Marie’s crew mates. Believing the infighting to be her tanks engaging in a fierce battle with Ooarai, she told her crew mates to not worry and then gave permission to the ARL to leave formation. Thinking that she was expressing support for the infighting, the ARL then told Marie that they for sure were going to crush the Somua tanks. It was then that Marie realized that her tanks weren’t fighting Ooarai but instead each other. In a panic, she and her crew rushed to the FT to intercept her teammates. As the Somua and ARL tanks were about to fire at each other at point-blank range, the FT came just in time and prevented the tanks from firing on each other. After some arguing, Marie was able to ease tensions by revealing to her teammates that the Mallard Team was responsible for starting the whole debacle. After taking out the enemy B1, Marie had her tanks retreat from the bocage, due to them having already lost four tanks and being far out of formation. During their retreat, her team once again sung Chant de I’Oignon as Ooarai attempted to block their retreat, During the chase, both Ooarai and BC began to rapidly lose tanks. Eventually Ooarai was down to four tanks while BC was down to just the FT-17. Marie then realized that their only chance at winning was to knock out Ooarai’s flag tank (Turtle Team). Just as the FT was about to catch up to and knock out the Hetzer, Marie and her crew ran into the Shark Team. After being halted, Marie looked behind her and noticed that she was now also surrounded by the Leopon and Anglerfish Teams. Realizing that she was trapped and that the match was lost, Marie proceeded to take one last bite out of her cake before the FT was taken out, winning Ooarai the match. She is seen in an overhead shot, still enjoying her cake while smoke is bellowing out of the FT’s engine.
After the match, Marie chatted about the match with Miho, complimenting each other's strategies as their teams held a meal together. Later, during the quarter-finals match, Marie along with her vice commanders and Azumi spectated Ooarai’s match against Chi-Ha-Tan Academy, seeing the match as a learning oppurtunity. During the match, all four ate sweets like cake and Marie is last seen commenting on the strategies being used by the two competing schools.
Trivia[]
- Her birthday is the same as Napoleon III's. Whether or not this was intentional is unknown.
- Her character, name and appearance is based on the character Marie-Antoinette from the popular shōjo manga Rose of Versailles.
- The fact that Marie is part of the Escalator faction, BC Freedom's upper class and is the overall commander of the school, echoes her situation in the manga (and history) as Marie-Antoinette was part of the nobility and was the Queen of France.
- Marie has the same ojou ringlets as Marie-Antoinette in the manga.
- The fact that Marie is always depicted with cakes, could be a reference to the sixth book of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's 1782 Les Confessions where he wrote that "a great princess" (without naming her) said upon learning that the peasants had no bread, "Then let them eat cake !" (or brioche depending on the translation). The phrase is now commonly (and maybe wrongfully) attributed to Queen Marie Antoinette. However, there is no record of her having said it.
- She appears to have taken gymnastics, or the sort (such as yoga or ballet), as a hobby. This was seen when she managed to avoid Oshida’s gun by leaning back on her tank, flipping herself forward so she could get on top of her turret while Andou and Oshida were arguing (again), and having no trouble balancing herself on an ARL’s gun to talk to Oshida.
- Marie, along with her tankmates, are certainly the luckiest characters shown in the series, since, even though they crewed an extremely light and obsolete tank, they were hit by a Panzer IV and a Tiger (P) and survived.
- Marie's birthday is the April 20rd, the same date in 1792 that France declared war on Francis I of Austria, the "King of Hungary and Bohemia", beginning the French Revolutionary Wars. Her birthday is also the same as Napoleon III's. Whether or not this was intentional is unknown.
