Rosehip is one of the supporting characters in Girls und Panzer. She appears in Girls und Panzer der Film, the spin-off manga Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu!, and in the Drama CD.
Profile[]
Rosehip is a first year student at St. Gloriana Girls College and the Commander of their Crusader Tank Platoon.
Appearance[]
She is a girl of average height, with pinkish red hair and amber eyes.
Personality[]
She is very energetic and is a speedy runner, doing everything fast to complete tasks as soon as possible and, in some situations, like eating, to finish first. She never restrains herself when going after something, not caring about failure or what others may say if she doesn't behave in a way that is socially approved by them. According to Darjeeling this trait is something that St. Gloriana's Sensha-dō and its members naturally lack, and hence she is sometimes jealous of Rosehip. However, Rosehip naturally lacks the gracefulness, elegance and manners of a typical St. Gloriana Student; because of this, Darjeeling gave her a special table-manners class.
Background[]
Drama CD[]
According to the Drama CD, Rosehip comes from a big family, with her great-grandfather, her grandfather, her grandmother, her parents, seven older brothers and sister, plus two sisters-in-law and their three children, making a total of eighteen family members including Rosehip. Hence the reason why she always removes the speed limiters for everything she does, to avoid being the last one.
Also in the Drama CD it is mentioned that she witnessed the practice match between Ooarai and St. Gloriana, the first actual match Ooarai had on the anime; for Rosehip, it was an honor to watch Darjeeling in action. After the match, at the end of the episode, when Darjeeling, Orange Pekoe, and Assam are seen enjoying some tea, in the background are seen the Churchill and Matildas such as had been deployed in the battle, as well as a Crusader Mk.II. Rosehip didn't participate in that battle because she was not yet up to the standards of a St. Gloriana student, as stated above.
Gekkan Senshado Magazine[]
It is indicated that Rosehip participated in the semi-finals round against Kuromorimine. She acted with the other Crusaders as a scout, but it is unknown if she does anything else in the match. It is likely she would have been destroyed along with the other St. Gloriana tanks.
Girls und Panzer der Film[]
In Girls und Panzer der Film, she had a more active role as the commander of a Crusader Mk.III and the Crusader platoon, where her speed was used as an advantage. In the exhibition match between Ooarai/Chi-Ha-Tan vs. St. Gloriana/Pravda, she first served as a back-up to Dajeeling's main force. Later, inside the town battle zone, she served well as a distraction, but her excessive speed made her lose control of her tank during maneuvers, hit Klara's tank, and be partially buried under rubble. She survived (unlike Klara's T-34/85, completely buried by debris when Rosehip's external fuel tank exploded), and was about to rendezvous with her allies when she was inadvertantly hit in mid-air by a terribly aimed shot by Momo, who was actually aiming at the enemy flag tank, the Churchill.
Later in the movie, she temporarily transferred to Ooarai alongside her teammates to participate In the annihilation match between the Ooarai Compound Team vs. the All-Stars University Team. This time hers was the only Crusader. In the initial phase of the battle she provided support to Team Morning Glory. Later, after the teams dispersed, she used her tank's speed to fight the enemy, jumping a canal and performing a mid-air attack to take out an enemy M24 Chaffee tank, but in the process wrecking her own tank and being declared disabled. Rosehip was the last surviving member of her school in the annihilation match.
Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu![]
She has a cameo in the manga during a visit to Ooarai right after their victory in the annihilation match against the All-Stars University Team. She was scolded by the Public Morals Committee for running in the corridors. She also had a talk with Klara about what happened during the exhibition match.
Rosehip is in chapter 38 instructed to learn from observing Darjeeling and as a result she follows Darjeeling around and imitates her behaviour. This leads to her stopping Assam in order to first wish her a very pretty super fine day, aswell as try to find loose parts on her uniform to correct, however she doesen't find anything. She then further tries to imitate Darjeelings behaviour with Orange-Pekoe, however she misinterprets Darjeelings behaviour towards Orange-Pekoe and just tells Assam that she loves her, to which Assam froze in her action and started to blush while Rosehip dosen't seem to really understand what she just did. After that Rosehip follows Darjeeling to a room with a piano which is being played by Darjeeling herself. While listening to the music Rosehip falls asleep to which Darjeeling comments that Rosehip is fine just the way she is. After Rosehip wakes up she is reminded by Darjeeling that training is about to begin. Rosehip is also wondering why Assam is behaving strangely with her hiding behind a corner and blushing.
Ribbon Warrior[]
Rosehip commanded a Light Tank Mk.VII Tetrarch as part of Orange Pekoe's Chindits in a Tankathlon match against Rukuriri and the regular Sensha-Dō team's Matilda IIs, quickly eliminating their entire column from behind. She is shown wielding a Kukri, a Nepalese knife similar to a machete used by the Gurkhas of the British Army, to cut a path through the jungle-like vegetation for her tank, and again while charging Rukuriri's Matilda.
In their match against Bonple, Rosehip's tank was knocked out while attempting to shield Orange Pekoe's Tetrarch. During the Cauldron Tournament, she and Orange Pekoe join Bonple's team, as the losing team has to join with the winning team.
Trivia[]
- Like other students from St. Gloriana, she is named after a tea: rose hip tea. While rose hip tea does not actually have the vivid color of the tea she drinks while in battle, the color does reference it.
- Implied to come from a "lower-class" family in many of the derivative works. This could explain her much less tactful personality in comparison to the majority of the St. Gloriana members.
- She is said to have seven brothers. This could also attribute to her personality.
- Rosehip frequently displays aggression on an insanely reckless scale. She is not afraid to charge down any enemy, with or without support. Darjeeling's most common battlefield instruction to Rosehip is "Come back!".
- Rosehip's Crusader Mk.III has a speed governor on it, a mechanical feature that was installed on the Crusader (as well as many other tanks) to increase the life of the tank's drivetrain. However, in this case the governor may also serve to restrain Rosehip's excitement and lessen the chances of her losing control of her tank. Removing said governor during the match against the All-Stars University Team allowed her to take down the enemy Chaffee.
- Historically, tank crews did occasionally remove their tank's governor, and the increase in speed was often quite significant.
- Rosehip's Crusader has the dubious privilege of being the first tank to be knocked out by Momo, even though it was purely a lucky shot.
- She usually ends her sentences with ですわ (desu wa), a typical idiosyncratic speech pattern of girls from high society.
- She is also a mechanic of the Crusaders.
