Yogurt Academy (ヨlグルト学園) is one of the minor schools in Girls und Panzer.

Overview[]

Behavior & Policy[]

Almost all of Yogurt's senshado students operate agricultural vehicles as well as tanks. Alongside their regular agricultural products, Yogurt Academy also grows roses.

The unofficial motto of the school is “Frugality, Diligence, Patience.” Their dream of having a respectable senshado team might remain a dream for some time, because even if they were to acquire a decent lineup of new tanks, their senshado budget is not enough keep them operational, and so far there's no sign of any improvement to their funding. Even so, the students' patient nature might make the wait a little more bearable.

Materiel[]

Originally, Yogurt's senshado team consisted of CV-33 tankettes and Panzer 38(t) light tanks with a single Hotchkiss H39 for use in training. As a direct offensive maneuver was very difficult, if not impossible, with just light tanks, the school looked for newer and heavier vehicles. In the end, they managed to get their hands on a Sturmgeschütz III model F/G, Panzer IV model G/H, Jagdpanzer 38(t) “Hetzer”, Jagdpanzer IV/70, and Panther model D/G.

Though on paper this appears to be a very respectable force, the vehicles' history is more than a little odd. For example, the Sturmgeschütz III is presumed to be an F model, but also has upgrades that are unique to the G model. The Panzer IV has a new drive sprocket and a single-piece 80mm frontal armor plate but is equipped with an original model ZF SSG 76 transmission. Their other tanks are in a similar state, with mismatched serial numbers and odd, nonstandard configurations. Due to their Frankenstein-like nature, it is commonly believed that these vehicles were originally multiple wrecks that were welded into one single working tank. For record-keeping purposes, the Senshado Federation has simply given the tanks new registration numbers and has listed them with multiple model designations for convenience. However, as no major hull or turret component had been fabricated post-war, there were very few issues during their registration process with the Senshado Federation.

In recent years, these mismatched vehicles have attracted criticism for a lack of balance when compared to original tanks, as certain improved late-war parts could be used to upgrade a tank to make it more capable than it was originally. While technically legal, there are many critics, and it seems that this issue will remain contested for years to come. Another issue, although less controversial, is the mystery behind the tanks' procurement. There are rumors that Kuromorimine quietly provided the tanks to Yogurt Academy. Kuromorimine has denied these claims and has begun its own investigations as to where Yogurt has acquired their vehicles. Yogurt Academy also possesses many agricultural vehicles that are modified from tanks such as the Type 95 and the Panzer III. There have been talks about the possibility of temporarily converting their agricultural vehicles back into combat vehicles if for some reason they have a shortage of tanks.

Tactics[]

Despite having relatively mobile tanks, Yogurt's tactics revolve around defense. This has lost them many matches, since they often miss opportunities to counterattack.

School ship[]

As Bulgaria has never had aircraft carriers, the school ship's inspiration is unknown. The ship is relatively small, and a large portion of it is occupied by ranches, farms, and bathing facilities. The bathing facilities are very popular and use spring water from land.

Uniform[]

As no Yogurt Academy student is ever seen, their uniform is unknown. The only thing known about the uniforms is that roses are worn on them.

Background[]

Bulgaria once had diplomatic relations with Japan that were severed during World War II and restored in September 1959. It is unknown whether Yogurt Academy was created before or after World War II.

Yogurt Academy is a smaller school whose specialties are agriculture and animal husbandry. Specifically, they focus on keeping livestock and producing dairy products, the majority of which is yogurt that is produced with imported machinery from Bulgaria. The school is also popular for their Buddhist courses.

63rd National High School Senshado Tournament[]

Against Waffle[]

Main article: Yogurt Academy vs. Waffle Academy

Yogurt participated in the 63rd National High School Sensha-Dō Tournament and faced Waffle Academy as their first opponent. Their force was composed of CV.33s, Panthers, Hotchkiss H39s, StuG IIIs, Panzer IVs, Jagdpanzer IVs, Hetzers, and Panzer 38(t)s. They started the match by storming Waffle's position with their newly acquired tanks, which they were still not quite accustomed to using. The battle was fierce, and Waffle managed to create an opening in Yogurt's line, but eventually all of Waffle's tanks were taken out. Yogurt won the first round.

Against St. Gloriana[]

Main article: St. Gloriana Girls College vs. Yogurt Academy

In the second round, Yogurt faced St. Gloriana Girls College, one of the more powerful schools in senshado. Their force was the same as in the first round. They climbed a hill, only to be met by a barrage of fire from St. Gloriana's tanks. Yogurt attempted to return fire, but they lacked St. Gloriana's accuracy, rendering them unable to stop the assault. They reached the top of the hill, but though they fought fiercely, Yogurt was overwhelmed, and the Churchill took out Yogurt's flag tank. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

41st Winter Continuous Track Cup[]

Against Jatkosota[]

Yogurt participated in the 41st Winter Continuous Track Cup and faced Jatkosota High School as their first opponent. Their force was composed of at least four Panzer 38(t)s with one as the flag tank. They also fielded six other tanks, but their types are unknown. Only the end of the match is known: four Panzer 38(t)s (the flag tank among them) charged at the BT-42, which used one of the 38(t)s as a ramp to flip onto its side. This allowed the BT-42 to shoot Yogurt's flag tank from behind and take it out. Yogurt was eliminated in the first round.

Members[]

Yogurt Academy has no known students of note. In OVA 11, the current captain is introduced for the first time.

Trivia[]

  • Yogurt's logo consists of their name "Yogurt" written on a ribbon over a shield with a white and green background. The shield contains images of a yogurt pot and three red roses.
    • The yogurt pot and the school's name are a reference to the Bulgarian physician and microbiologist Stamen Grigorov, who discovered the bacteria used in making yogurt. Grigorov later contributed to the use of penicillin as a treatment for tuberculosis.
    • The roses are a reference to the Rose Valley, a region in Bulgaria south of the Balkan Mountains famous for its rose-growing industry. The Rose Valley produces 85% of the world's rose oil.
    • The colors used in the logo (white, green, and red) are the colors of the Bulgarian flag.
  • This school was likely among the first ones which answered the call from the MEXT to strengthen their senshado team for the upcoming world championship in Japan. They managed to obtain much better tanks in between 62nd and 63rd national championships.
  • Yogurt is one of three schools shown in the series that have no known members. The other two are Viking Fisheries and Waffle.
